Recipe - Salt Dough Ornaments - December 2016

Ingredients:
1 cup salt
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup water

Other Tools:
parchment paper, wax paper, or aluminium foil
rolling pin
cup/cookie cutters (cutting shapes)
straw/pen (for punching hole)

Directions:
1. Mix salt, flour, and water in a bowl until it becomes firm.
2. Knead dough for 30 seconds.
3. Roll out dough. The thicker the dough the longer it will take to dry.
4. Cut out shapes.
      - For paw print ones I cut circles with a glass. Then press your dog's paw into it.
5. Use straw/pen to cut a whole for the ribbon to hang the ornament.
6. You may bake them in a 200 degree oven for 2-3 hours. (I believe I left ours sit out overnight.)
7. Once cooled and dried out paint or decorate as desired.

I painted ours with craft paint and put string on them to hang them.

Dachshund Kitchen Themed Decor

Upon moving into our apartment almost three years ago, I had a sort of vision as to how I wanted to decorate most of the rooms. I knew I wanted a beach theme in the bath room, a Paris/London theme in the bed room, and a Moose/Country theme in the living room. This left me with two rooms I wasn't sure about. the dining room and kitchen. The dining room theme came to me shortly after, Wizard of Oz. The kitchen theme alluded me for a while longer.

While shopping at Dollar General one day I found a new seasonal line of towels and oven mitts that had dog themed things all over them and that's when I knew. My kitchen shall be Dachshund/Dog themed, and so it was from then on!

Below are pictures of all the decor items I have that fit into the Dachshund/Dog theme.

Above my kitchen sink I have no window, so I hung the clock and two fork pictures before I decided on the Dachshund theme. Afterward, I added a wooden box sign (seen better below).

Purchased at T. J, Maxx.

Below the box sign I have a self hung on the wall above the sink where I store a few kitchen items (flower shaker, powdered sugar shaker, oil spritzer, and toothpick dispenser).

Dachshund ring holder Chip (& his dad) got me for my 1st Mother's Day.

On both sides of the clock, fork pictures, and box sign I have three shelves for nick-kacks. All of course are mostly dog themed and seen below.

Top left: Box sign #1 & kissing Chihuahua salt & pepper shakers #1.
Middle left: Dachshund salt & pepper shakers #2 & box sign #2.
Bottom left: box sign #3 & Onion keeper.
Top right: box sign #4 & Dachshund garden decor figurine.
Middle right: Kissing Dachshund salt & pepper shakers #3 & box sign #5.
Bottom right: Box sign #6 & tomato keeper.

All of they box signs read as follows:
#1 "Kiss your dog daily" - Purchased by me at T. J. Maxx $
#2 "My kids bark" - Purchased by me at T. J. Maxx $
#3 "I work hard so my dog can have a better life" - Purchased by me at T. J. Maxx $
#4 "Wag more bark less" - Purchased by me at T. J. Maxx $
#5 "All you need is love and a dog" - Received as a Christmas gift
#6 "Time spent with dogs is never wasted" - Purchased by me at T. J. Maxx $

Salt & Pepper Shakers:
#1 Purchased a long while ago, from L.T. D. Commodities. (If I remember correctly.)
#2 Received as a Christmas gift, they were from Target.
#3 Received as a Christmas gift, bought on Amazon.

The Dachshund garden decor figurine is from Big Lots, $6, in 2015. I did see them again in 2016.

Dishwasher magnet from Amazon.

I have built up quite a decent collection of oven-mits and kitchen towels, both holiday themed and everyday.
Valentines towel from Bon Ton.
Halloween towel from Bon Ton.
Towel set from T. J. Maxx.
Towel set from T. J. Maxx.
Towel set from T. J. Maxx.
Red, White, and Blue towel set from T. J. Maxx.
Dollar General towel.
Dollar General towel.
Dollar General towels.
Dollar General oven-mits.
Dollar General Christmas Towels.

And thus the Dachshund/Dog themed kitchen was born! If you have any questions on anything please don't hesitate to leave them in the comments and I will do my very best to answer them! I will also try to link as many things as I can find below.

Chip & Jessica

Recipe - Easy Ice Ceam (Pintrest) - October 2016

Ingredients:
3 ripe bananas (mashed)
32 ounces plain yogurt
1 cup peanut butter

Directions:
Blend all ingredients together.
Pour mixture into ice cube trays.
Freeze.

I made this recipe for Chip's third birthday party to serve to his dog family and friends. It would have paired nicely with the pup cakes, but instead of putting it into ice cube trays I put it into a metal pampered chef bowl. It froze well and hardened more that I had anticipated. Therefore I could not scoop it.

Part of the problem  had could have been that I made it the night before and left it freeze for too long. I would recommend two to three hours freeze time.

A Birthday Party for Your Dog

Burlap banner: "Chip's Barkday"

I started throwing Chip birthday parties in 2014 when he turned one. This year (2016) is his third birthday and I wanted to go over how I came up with some of my ideas and hopefully help you throw together your own birthday part for your dog!

Guests

Obviously since you are having a party for your dog you want to invite other dogs, but that doesn't mean you should exclude humans. In Chip's case we invite his dog relatives and friends, as well as his human relatives. You should make sure that all of the dogs know each other and are friendly toward one another before the day of the party.

Chip's guest list includes his dog mother and father, his dog brothers and sisters, and a few dog friends. It also includes his immediate human family: Grandmas, Grandpas, Aunts, Uncles, and Cousins.

Some of Chip's party guests.

Invitations

I did in the past make invitations in Microsoft Word with cute clip art. This year however I simply bought two packs of 8 premade invitations at Dollar Tree and filled them out. In addition I have made a Facebook event all three years. Paper invitations may not be necessary, but I still feel that it is indeed a nice touch.

Menu

As you can imagine with both dogs and humans being invited to the party there must be both dog and human foods. I did search dog birthday party of Pinterest a few times and gathered some ideas from pins I saw that I liked.

Mirroring the candy bar wedding/party favor idea I decided to do a doggie bar. On the doggie bar I had Milkbone biscuits, Beggin' Strips, Exclusively Dog Cookies, Meaty Bones, Ol' Rory Jerky Strips, and Milkbone Trail Mix. This doubles as both dog snack foods for the party as well as a bar from which treats are chosen to take home in the dog's favor bags.

As for human foods, I decided to do sliders. I decided upon bbq pulled chicken and mini burgers with all the fixings. In addition I decided upon bowtie macaroni salad, spring salad, chips, pretzels, rice crispy teats, puppy chow, confetti cake dip with graham cracker sticks, punch, and soda.

I used Dollar Tree plastic dog dishes as bowls.
Confetti cake dip with Scooby Doo graham cracker sticks.

I kept as much of it dog themed as possible. I bought mini bowtie pasta for the macaroni and spring salads because Chip wears bowties a lot. The chips we are calling paw-tato chips, and the pretzels we are calling fetch sticks. The rice crispy treats were made shaped like bones and the puppy chow is self explanatory. I bought a box of Scooby Doo graham cracker sticks which are also bone shaped for the dip. The punch was be labeled toilet water.

We cut the pumpernickel bread slices with a bone shaped cookie cutter.

Cake & Ice Cream

It wouldn't be much of a birthday party without cake and ice cream. This one is no exception. In fact, we have two cakes, a dog cake and a human cake!

I am very fortunate to have an absolutely amazing cake baker and decorator in the family. Before Chip's first birthday party I purchased a paw shaped cake pan on Amazon. She has used that pan to make the dog cake for the first and second party, icing it with cream cheese, and decorating it with crushed bacon strip treats. She  always uses a dog friendly recipe. This year she made pupcakes!  ( I don't think she has used the same cake recipe twice yet.)

Pup-cakes.

Human cake.

As for the human cake, it is always a chocolate cake. Each year we search the internet for ideas on what shape to have, and each year it is different. Chip's first birthday it was paw print, his second was a sitting dog decorated to look like Chip, and this year's a dog face decorated to look like him.

Chip with the human cake.

Last year I bought dog ice cream on Amazon. This year I made some using a recipe I found on Pinterest. If you are interested in that recipe you can find it on our blog. It is the featured recipe for October.

Decorations

I don't go too over board on decorations. I have already decorated my kitchen in a dachshund/dog theme. This year I was lucky enough to find Secret Life of Pets balloons at Dollar Tree. Other than those balloons I made a banner inspired by one I saw on Pinterest (as seen in the first photo in this post).

Gifts

I always stress that bringing a gift to the party is not necessary. It is not the reason we have the party. We have the party to celebrate every moment of the previous year that we got to spend with Chip. To celebrate all the wonderful memories we have had with him. I wrote in the invitations that gifts were not necessary, as well as in the Facebook event.

Despite gifts not being necessary, we as his parents do always get him a few things. I gift bag them and set the bag out in  a special place with any other gifts that do show up. We  do set down with Chip during the party and open them with everyone who attends. It's a great picture opportunity, as well as a good time.

Party Favors

As for favors I do both dog friendly ones as well as human friendly ones. A few things are always the same every year. We have photos taken of Chip and give one to each family, as well as treats to the dogs. In addition, last year we gave each dog a squeaky toy. This year each dog got either a handmade bowtie or a handmade flower to wear on their collar. For Chip's first birthday party, the humans got a large dachshund cookie cutter. For his second, they got the smaller dachshund cookie cutter. This year I was able to find a few dachshund shaped pens.

Chip & Jessica

Featured Friend - - October 2016

October 2016's featured friend has been chosen and the honor goes to Brian!

Congratulations Brian!

Brian is a six year old, Chihuahua, Dachshund, Terrier mix from the United States.

Six years ago Brian's dog mom was abandoned while pregnant. She was rescued by the nice folks at Animal Compassion Team. After the puppies were born, they were all moved to a foster home. Brian stole his foster mom's heart! She decided to adopt him and his dog mom, Soosie, turning them into "foster fails." Two more of Brian's litter mates, Kira and Cooper, were ultimately also adopted by their foster mom. Turning the whole situations into an epic "foster fail!"

Brian lives in the country with his big rescue family where they have lots of fun chasing squirrels during the day and snuggling every night with mom and dad. He has overcome back surgery and rehab after losing the ability to walk due to disc disease. Now he his a happy, healthy, active boy!

Brian is one of Chip's Instagram Followers.

Apps - - Pokemon Go & Walk For a Dog

Pokémon Go

Pokémon GO is a gaming app created by Niantic with the tag line “Get up and go catch Pokémon in the real world with Pokémon GO!” This app is available in both Apple and Android.

Now you may be asking yourself why a dog blog is blogging about Pokémon GO. There is one simple answer; it has had a huge impact on dogs across the globe. While it was intended to get humans up and outside walking more, it has also had a similar impact on dogs.

Those humans with dogs are taking their dogs with them while walking around looking for Pokémon.  I have also seen some post shared on Facebook telling how Pokémon GO has been affecting dogs in shelters across the country. Some shelters have started renting their dogs for those playing Pokémon Go to walk while playing to help hide the fact that they are playing the game. (I will include a couple screen shots of them below.)

When possible, My boyfriend and I take Chip for what we call Poke-walks. We take a few different routes through our local town past the majority of the Poke-stops to collect gear. We get to play Pokemon Go and Chip gets to go on a walk. It benefits all three of us by giving us something to look forward to and get us excited about getting outside to exercise.

Walk For A Dog

In addition to Pokémon GO, there is an app called Walk for a Dog by WoofTrax, Inc. It is also available on both Apple and Android.

Walk for a Dog donates to your local animal shelter. The more people walking for your selected animal shelter the more money they could receive. At the end of each donation period the funds are divided between the shelters based on the number of active walkers. Their funds are acquired by sponsorships and advertising.

I love that I can run Walk for a Dog in the background while playing Pokemon Go. It makes me feel like I am doing something fun while also doing something that benefits dogs less fortunate than Chip.

I try to remember each and every time I walk to use this app, whether I am playing Pokémon Go, walking Chip, or just walking on my own.

I run both of these apps on an Android based Samsung Galaxy s5.

Sincerely,

Chip & Jessica
